As the Olympic Torch Relay took a short break over Christmas, I hit Revelstoke Mountain Resort in British Columbia with my red Olympic mitts for a rip & to test some HD helmet cameras that Santa gave me (see Santa in the Arctic in this video). This ski hill has the longest vertical drop in North America, and when you get to the top you'll see it for yourself. What a mountain! At the end of this video you see a Ski Camera test go wrong where it explodes off my ski!
BC is also giving away a mountain so that means Revy could be yours! Check it out here!

My husband and I are back from a week in the backcountry near Revelstoke, freshly showered and now re-living our adventures. A vacation that all boils down to this: Eat. Ski. Sleep. Skiing was the real reason we showed up. However the day we arrived, while sunny and beautiful, was another clear day in a long spell of no new snow. But that changed quickly, because it started snowing on Monday night and didn't stop til Thursday morning. By that time, over 80cm had fallen (94cm was the tally by week's end). So much powder fell that we didn't know what to do with it - there may actually be, it turns out, such thing as too much snow. It took me a bit of time to get my mojo going, but the fun was endless - following each other through the trees with hoots and hollers, gales of laughter and the occassional scream, hitting a note somewhere between fear and joy. By Thursday though, the snow had moved on, the sun came out and our groove had set in. That was the day I had the best day of skiing. Ever. Let me tell you, a day like that leaves one with an amazing feeling of euphoria. Here's some video from our trip; enjoy.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort was the first stop on my epic journey. With a heavy snowfall to greet me, this was nothing short of a powder dream! Even though the airline had lost my luggage, that was quickly forgotten once I was carted up in the 4500 ft gondola to a powder paradise.

On a recent trip to the newly opened Revelstoke Mountain Resort, I had the opportunity to spend an hour at the Revelstoke Nickelodeon Museum in the heart of the town centre. Once you make it past the amazing gift shop packed with unusual musical knick-knacks, antique and modern mechanical music machines, the room opens to reveal hundreds of beautiful mechanical instruments from the 18th Century to the 1950s. This museum is the only mechanical music museum in western Canada and is operated by a charming couple that between the two of them know more about this sort of stuff than one could imagine. Make sure to enjoy their one hour guided tour to learn about the musical instruments, Victorian music boxes, player pianos, pipe organs and colourful juke boxes.
The highlight for me (beyond the cheerful music) was the RCA/Mills Panoram Video Jukebox (circa 1940) which is basically a wooden box that contains what is essentially the first music video, only the films shown were called "soundies". According to the written description on the machine, over 1850 different soundies were produced in the early 1940s with musical styles ranging from Country and Western to Big Band.
So, when the sking day is done, head on downtown to this unique and enjoyable museum. You are sure to learn something, and be grandly entertained along the way.
